Return of the Tragic Hornhead....
By Jason Bean
When it comes to favorite superheroes I always end up going back to lawyer Matt Murdock and his alter-ego, the vigilante Daredevil. Different writers of course have had varying degrees of success with the hero (from Frank Miller's character-defining run to Mark Waid's current, swashbuckling take) yet the one that's left the biggest impression on me was Brian Michael Bendis. 'End of Days' is very much a return to Bendis' Daredevil; a crime-story in which heroes and villains bleed in equal measure (and don't always win) and the mean-streets of Hell's Kitchen can get VERY mean.

'Daredevil: End of Days' starts at the very end of the hero's life: Matt Murdock returns to Hell's Kitchen after a self-imposed exile only to be killed in a prolonged fight with Bullseye, one of his arch-enemies. Ben Urich, a reporter for the Daily Bugle (and sometimes friend of Daredevil and other superheroes) is assigned to write a story about Matt and tries to fill-in the gaps of the deceased hero's missing life. This of course has Ben confronting everyone in Daredevil's circle, from Elektra to The Punisher and puts him in the crosshairs of Matt's surviving enemies. To make matters more complicated there's a vigilante running around in Daredevil's costume as well as a mystery involving Matt's dying words.

'Daredevil: End of Days' is obviously a very grim story and writers Brian Michael Bendis and David Mack pull no punches when it comes to the tragic aspects of Daredevil's world: Daredevil bleeds in droves before Bullseye delivers the killing blow, the people of Hell's Kitchen would rather record Matt's death on their cellphones than help him; hookers dress up like superheroes, a certain vigilante is hooked on amphetamines and a superhero uncharacteristically threatens to kill a villain....then follows through with it. 'End of Days' also covers a lot of ground when it comes to Daredevil's history but for the most part Bendis and Mack keep this dark story engaging right through to the end (even if the final "reveal" feels more like a punchline than a resolution). The artwork by previous Daredevil collaborators Laus Janson, Bill Sienkiewicz, and Alex Maleev fits the story's grim-tone perfectly. David Mack's own work (mostly during flashbacks) is particularly stunning!

I can't say I missed this grim take on Daredevil's world (nor am I looking forward to it's inevitable return when Mark Waid's done) but 'End of Days' proves that no one does superhero tragedy better than Bendis and company. It's a nice conclusion for fans who've kept their Daredevil Omnibus' around and an engaging read for those that like their superhero stories as serious as a funeral.

a great death of Daredevil and a good CODA for the Bendis run
By Frank L. Greenagel Jr.
The biggest problem with Marvel and DC comics is that major characters can never die, and if they do, they don't stay dead (years ago, the line was that "everyone that dies comes back, except for Bucky Barnes, Gwen Stacy and Jason Todd"). Characters trudge around 50 to 70 years of convoluted backstories, and except for a few inspired writer-driven runs, not much changes.

The essential Daredevil was written by Frank Miller and Brian Michael Bendis. Miller created the modern character with 30 issues in the early 80's (added the ninja angle, set up the Kingpin as his arch-enemy, made Daredevil an anti-hero, introduced Elektra) and then took it to a new height with 1986's "Born Again" and 1993's "Man Without Fear." Bendis wrote Daredevil from 2001 to 2006. It was a brilliantly inspired run (although he only won one Eisner award during it, which was criminal) where Matt Murdock was outed to the public and became more unstable and violent than ever.

Ed Brubaker took over after Bendis left and did a decent job, and then Andy Dingle and Mark Waid just burned the series to the ground after that. The series got silly or recycled old plots and themes.

This trade (really deserves 4.5 stars) is a wonderful end for Daredevil, and is the kind of story we need for all the characters we've followed for the past 30 (or 40 or 50) years. Bendis ignores what everyone else has done since he stopped writing the series in 2006. Bendis rewrites the history that Daredevil kills Wilson Fisk in the streets of Manhattan and then disappears. This story begins with Daredevil reappearing in Manhattan about 5 years later (very Dark Knight-esque, but it works), where he fights Bullseye in a battle royale in which he is killed. Ben Urich spends the entire series trying to piece together what happened to Matt over the last several years, and what was meant by his last word to Bullseye.

All the important characters in Matt's life show up in this, one way or another.

Additionally, Klaus Janson (the artist of the aformentioned Miller run), Alex Maleev (Bendis co-conspirator & artist) and Bill Sienkiewicz (artist on a lesser known Miller graphic novel from '86) all contribute to this collection, tying up all the best versions of Daredevil into a deft conclusion.
