Il materialista non va più in là. Uomini di pur grande valore scientifico, come il Lombroso del quale diremo più innanzi, idolatri del metodo sperimentale, limitarono l’Universo alle sole manifestazioni sensibili. Che non fossero percepibili certe particolari manifestazioni della Vita solo perché ci mancavano gli strumenti adatti a percepirli non contava. Ciò bastava ad escludere decisamente dal campo scientifico ed a relegare in quello della ciarlataneria alcune manifestazioni che trascendevano la capacità umana di comprendere e di controllare. Coloro che avevano messo sul frontone del Tempio elevato alla Scienza la condanna del dogma (si chiama in filosofia dogma ogni verità che si dà per ammessa e per provata) s’erano resi schiavi a loro volta di un altro dogma: a furia di spalancare gli occhi per cercare la verità avevano finito per non vedere la verità che respirava intorno a loro. Verità esoterica, oscura, incerta, non per suo difetto, ma per difetto dei mezzi dei quali gli uomini dispongono e che non sono adatti a rivelarla.

Excellently narrated. Better drill illustrations needed

Currently as a fairly inexperienced football (soccer) coach with a fair amount of past playing experience, I wanted to find some up-to-date resources to help me coach my 13th grade boy's soccer team. Formation training seems to be what the coaches and teams are really focussing on more and more these days (so it seems to me anyway), so the subject matter grabbed my immediate attention for this purpose.

I found the reading experience enjoyable and informative. The background history of this formation I found interesting and the way the objectives of the formation in attack and defence were outlined were well explained too.

What disappointed me however were the example training drill pictures. With some excellent soccer graphics packages on the market today equipped with features that really bring training plans to life, I thought that the pictures in the book lacked detail and explanation. I'm sure a seasoned coach would have seen and played these drills many times over and therefore not needed the shirts to be numbered or a few more arrows here and there, but I don't think it's the seasoned coach that this book was intended for.

Also what would have been nice would be advice on how one could implement this formation at the various age and ability levels and what about including a sample season training programme to support the various attaching and defensive drills? I thinks these 2 points would have finished off the book nicely.

That said, I did enjoy this book and would happily recommend it.

Compelling, gripping and will NOT let you go

As soon as I finished this book, I tweeted: ‘Wow. Now I have to find the words to review this in more than that one word’. I’ve left it a few days and the story is still firmly with me.

What the blurb says:

Desperate to escape her past, Jenna moves to a remote cottage on the Welsh coast, but she is haunted by her fears, her grief and her memories of the cruel November night that changed her life for ever.

DI Ray Stevens is tasked with seeking justice for a mother who is living every parent's worst nightmare. Determined to get to the bottom of the case, it begins to consume him as he puts both his professional and personal life on the line.

As Ray and his team seek to uncover the truth, Jenna, slowly, begins to glimpse the potential for happiness in her future. But her past is about to catch up with her and the consequences will be devastating . . .

Which rather cleverly (and from the perspective of someone who has now finished it), actually tells you everything and nothing all at once. At more than one point in this novel I thought I knew what I was reading and what was coming; each time I was wrong.

This novel just breaks all the rules - brilliantly and over and over again! I couldn’t put it down, despite the fact (and probably partly because) it is an intensely uncomfortable read for a variety of reasons. The first of which becomes clear very early on in the story and which I am therefore going to tell you about; I promise it will be the ONLY spoiler in this review.

The story opens with the tragic accident referred to in the blurb: ‘hit-and-run in Fishponds, guv. Five-year-old boy killed’. If, like me, you routinely avoid novels that might make you feel sad, I promise you won’t regret giving this one a go. Although the accident is the catalyst for the novel, there are SO many layers to this story: ‘I’ve told him more than I ever intended to, but I can’t tell him everything. If I do, he’ll leave, and I’ll have no one to stop me from falling’. Sooooo many questions!

Initially, the story moves between that of DI Stevens and his team investigating the accident, and that of those involved with Jacob (the five year old boy) himself. The police sections (ironically) serve as a palate cleanser in-between the faster-paced, higher-tension parts of the story. Don’t get me wrong, there are tensions there too:”‘Ray, you said no work!’ Ray was confused. ‘But the kids are in bed.’ ‘Yes, but I’m –‘Mags stopped…”. But without this part of the story, the reader would quite probably be holding their breath continually…

I honestly can’t remember the last novel I read that was comparable in terms of emotional experience. I felt all the same emotions as Jenna, deeply and compellingly. From grief: ‘Such a small impact on the world, yet the very centre of my own… The grief I feel is so physical it seems impossible that I am still living’; to anger and disgust: ‘You can’t do anything by yourself, Jennifer’; to guilt: ‘Each time a wave of fear hits me, I remind myself what I did, and that I have no right to be frightened’; and finally, complete and utter fear: ‘I will find you… Wherever you’ve gone to, I’ll find you. And then I will come for you’. Just imagine welcoming the idea of Prison, simply for the security and safety it provides. Chilling.

Later on in the story, the narrative is split further between Jenna and Ian, her husband. I would love to ask Clare Mackintosh whether writing Ian’s parts in the first person were as difficult to imagine and write as they are for the reader to read? Just incredible - infuriating, jarring and brutally honest.

I can’t talk in specifics about themes and events without spoiling the story, so I won’t. Suffice it to say, this novel will NOT let you go. Just read it.

Brilliant.

First of all I have no problem saying that this is the best psychological thriller I have read this year, no prevarication. For sheer addictive reading and utterly compelling character arcs, a very emotional storyline and some exquisite twists and turns throughout I loved this one very much.

Jenna has retreated from life after a tragic accident left her bereft – but in the small Welsh community she ends up in there is hope of a new start and a brighter future. However some things are difficult to let go of and as Jenna attempts to move forwards there are things pulling her back into her past, things she must face if she is ever to find happiness again.

This is a totally haunting read -Jenna is a brilliantly drawn character who you will feel for every step of the way. To suffer as she has is unimaginable, and putting the rest aside this is a very emotional and heart wrenching look at how unexpected tragedy can torment us and affect our very soul. The heart of the novel is right there in Jenna as she struggles with the mundane day to day and attempts to move on, her attitudes and expectations of the new people in her life are very well described and utterly authentic.

Added to that very human story is a terrific mystery element that keeps you avidly turning the pages to find out the truth of the matter – Jenna aside there is a terrific range of characters to follow along with as things become untangled and slowly but surely we are lead towards a brilliantly poignant and touching conclusion.

Overall then a truly magnificent tale and one that I have no trouble at all recommending to everyone – If you love reading you will love this. Simple.

Not a great read

This book started out GREAT! Terrific writing, interesting story, but devolved into a spousal abuse tale and a not very interesting one. All the elements of a good story were sort of thrown away and the plot lines became obvious. A predictable love story, a predictable result. Too bad. I was really enjoying the first half.

A different take on the Cinderella story.

I absolutely loved this book. The story was charming, and it truly reminded me of Cinderella, only with Cinderella being an elderly lady with a very wonderful nephew in this case. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a light and happy story with just the right touch of drama.

So much better than what I expected!

Reading the blurb for Not Safe For Work I had a few expectations. I expected a secret office romance, BDSM, M/M sex, and the most obviously, for said office romance to be discovered. Beyond that, I was just hoping the book was going to be good. I've never read anything by author L.A. Witt so this was going to be a new experience for me. Never did I expect to be blown away. I. Loved. This. Book.

The story - architectural modeler, Jon, sitting in a meeting, plays around with his kinky dating app discovers a perfect match...in the same room! Turns out is the hot CEO of his firm's biggest client, Rick. They decide to give it a shot where they find out they are they are perfect match in and out of the dungeon. They enjoy each others' company until Jon's boss finds out. He puts unscrupulous demands on Jon to keep Rick happy. The premise was actually very good. There's a nice flow to the story building, good characters with the right amount of heat. There's tension towards the ending, and yes of course a HEA. Some parts were a bit predictable but it still came together very nicely. Based on that alone I would have given NSFW 4-stars. But wait...there's more.

The sex - Let me just say it now, the sex was off the hook. Spicy. Sensual. Amazeballs. I've read plenty of M/M romances and erotica. I’m use to reading about BJs and anal so nothing to be shocked about there. However, I have never read a book that had a sex machine. That was just WOW! Throw in a Wartenberg wheel… KACHOW! Handcuffs, ropes, wax play to round the fun out…yes please. However, the cock cage really had me in stitches. Obviously, NSFW is not just a random title! However, it's not all BDSM, there's a nice balance of vanilla that is both powerful and tender. The other thing I really enjoyed was the D/s, specifically the lack of Ogre Dominance and the simpering submission. I get sooo tired of reading D/s stories where the Dom is overbearing/harsh and the sub is always begging. Not just begging, groveling! The yes please Master, whatever you say Master, lick your boots Master sometimes gets on my NERVES! Thankfully, that is completely absent here. Jon is firm and Rick is willing to please but none of it ever seemed demeaning.All this delicious fun kicks this book straight to a 5-flame rating.

The characters - Jon and Rick. Both in their mid-40s, which is a very nice switch from the standard twenty-something stories that are everywhere. And with them being very close in age none of that May-December fluff either. The story is told solely from Jon's 1st person POV. There's also Jon's ex-wife (In a good way) and current co-works that really add to the story. Now what really blows me away is the dynamics between Jon and Rick. Not just the sex which was HAWT, but the genuine relationship that builds between them as D/s and lovers as well as  friends. Things aren't always smooth sailing as they develop into a couple but that's what makes NSFW so special, the genuineness, the less than perfectness to it all. That right there, the human, flawed, the pain, the joy, the emotion of it, is what made this best book for me.

If I could give NSFW more than 5- stars I would in a heartbeat but since I can't I will put my stamp of recommendation on it. Outstanding read by L.A. Witt! I'm ready for more of her books.

 I really enjoyed this – I do like L.A.Witt’s writing style so I was pretty sure anyway that this would work for me. Its got themes in it that could apply to anyone, the kink discrimination, the workplace issues, but when you throw in the gay/bisexual side it gets even more difficult to deal with. Sometimes I think we delight in making life difficult for others – its sad that everything in this book felt so so real – but of course that’s also what makes it for me a great read, given they finally find a way through. I need a HEA, life has too much death and disaster for me to want it from my reads too....
So there’s Jon, bored at a meeting and playing with the new app on his phone, and it gives him a match, right across the table! Rick – the firms biggest client, the one that’s keeping them afloat. Wow – heart attack stuff eh? Somehow though they get together and from just at first one meeting, then a few more, they’re getting closer and its not just a kink thing anymore – but its secret and they always creep out don’t they? S.. hit meet Fan! The results of that were gobsmacking – poor Jon, he really was in a rock and hard place situation and I so felt for him. Damned if he does damned if he doesn’t.
What I loved too was the way L.A. took conventions and turned them around, so rich, successful Rick is the sub, and sort of employee Jon is the Dom, likewise Rick is taller, Jon shorter. Its little things, but stuff that often gets stereo-typed, with tall, good-looking and rich mostly seeming to be Doms. I enjoyed the twist – added some extra potential complications. I guess what makes the story so special for me is the romance side, and the way they both feel so real. I loved the office banter too, the NSFW room, and the atmosphere in it. Jon’s home situation too – unusual in a way and yet the finance side of it so very, very common. Its a great read, one that will really bring home how on the edge some situations can get, how difficult it can be to live outside the “norm” people expect from others.

 Stars: Five, a great read, fabulous characters, very real story, and fantastic HEA!
