Lee had never led troops in combat until suddenly given command of a demoralized, hodgepodge force under siege from McClellan in front of Richmond. In a detailed study of Lee's growth in the mastery of the techniques of war, he shows his early mistakes, the nature of his seemingly intuitive powers, the limitations imposed by his personal character and physical decline, and the effect of this character on the men with whom he created a legendary army. It was after the fighting was over that Dowdey believes Lee made his most significant and neglected achievement. As a symbol of the defeated people, he rose above all hostilities and, in the wreckage of his own fortunes, advocated rebuilding a New South, for which he set the example with his progressive program in education. The essence of Lee's tragedy was the futility of his efforts toward the harmonious restoration of the Republic with the dissensions of the past forgotten.

About the Author
Clifford Dowdey (1904 1979) was an American writer, best known for his fascination with the Civil War and southern American history. A native of Richmond, Virginia, Dowdey lived and worked in almost every region of the United States before returning back to his home state. He published his first bestseller, Bugles Blow No More, in 1937 and would write over thirty-five books throughout his career. He died in Richmond in 1979.

Read the first 80% after the war it was not even Lee's thoughts.

The first 80% of book is about Lee's boyhood grows adulthood then to the end of the civil war. Which was educational but the next 5% is on the strife of the South after the war and how the North should have out of there business the next 15% I have not got myself into. I think it is much like the 5% I couldn't agree with. It's a good read up to the end of the war.

A Must Read

If you like historical Civil War novels, this book is a "must" read. In today's political climate, it is heartening to read about a man with true integrity. The book was well written and describes how Lee's every decision was based on internal values of morality.
