A collection of quotations, many of which promote physical exercise

Over the years I have read scores, perhaps hundreds of book on the importance of staying physically fit. Some are "how to" books, others are primarily motivational in nature. Philip Morin's book is one of the latter. I was aware of this when the author informed me of the book and I downloaded it for review purposes. What I was not prepared for was that this book, other than a two-page introduction, is simply a collection of hundreds of quotes related to physical fitness. Many of these quotes are properly classified as motivational quotes, and reading one or more of them a day may have the salutary effect of motivating someone to exercise. But not all are. While most of them are positive toward physical exercise, a few are not. For example, there's a quote from Mark Twain that reads, "I have never taken any exercise, except sleeping and resting, and I never intend to take any." This is hardly a quote designed to motivate anyone to exercise. Then there's one from the twentieth-century philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, which reads, "The human body is the best picture of the human soul." While this is an interesting idea, in context it simply is a statement of LW's monistic belief that the body is not distinct from the soul. Again, not really a motivational quote.

Another issue is that the quotes seem to be in a random order. It would have been helpful if the author had placed them under various sub-categories.

Although I was expecting that this book would be more than just a string of quotations, I am giving it Four Stars. For those who tend to get motivated by reading quotes, there are plenty of them in this collection, and while there are a number of exceptions, the majority stress the benefits of exercise.

It's between will and drive!

A lot of motivational and inspirational quotes for fitness. The quotes gathered are very effective to help you set your goal in getting fit and healthy. There are few reasons to give up in life but there are millions of ways to still keep on fighting and those are written in this book. This gave me the will and drive to change my lifestyle and my eating habits and I become more productive everyday at work and at home. I have changed a lot with the help of this book that was given to me by my friend at work. I really thank him a lot and I owe him big time. I would likely to share this to every people I love and I will keep promoting this book to my social media accounts. Thank goodness and Thank you Philip Morin for creating this book.

In his introduction Philip states, ‘Fitness is defined as the quality of being suitable to perform a particular task. Around 1950, perhaps consistent with the Industrial Revolution and the treatise of World War II, the term fitness increased in western vernacular by a factor of ten. Modern definitions of fitness describe either a person or machine's ability to perform a specific function or a holistic definition of human adaptability to cope with various situations. This has led to an interrelation of human fitness and attractiveness, which has mobilized global fitness and fitness equipment industries. Regarding specific function, fitness is attributed to personnel who possess significant aerobic or anaerobic ability, i.e. strength or endurance. A holistic definition of fitness is described by Greg Glassman in the CrossFit journal as an increased work capacity across broad times and modal domains; mastery of several attributes of fitness including strength, endurance, power, speed, balance and coordination and being able to improve the amount of work done in a given time with any of these domains. A well-rounded fitness program will improve a person in all aspects of fitness, rather than one, such as only cardio/ respiratory endurance or only weight training. A comprehensive fitness program tailored to an individual typically focuses on one or more specific skills, and on age- or health-related needs such as bone health. Many sources also cite mental, social and emotional health as an important part of overall fitness.‘ It is this latter emphasis on the mind’s influence form which Philip draws his helpful quotes on fitness.
