Then, in 1960, Brosnan, a relief pitcher of little fame, published his account of the 1959 season, which he started with the St. Louis Cardinals and ended with the Cincinnati Reds. Though he omitted the prurient details that would mark later sports books, his unvarnished record of the mundanities of a ballplayers’ existence was a revelation to the world at large. Fans were amazed that an athlete could write, and athletes were upset that he would write. Many were angry that they had been portrayed as actual human beings. Brosnan (dubbed “The Professor” because he enjoyed reading for pleasure) went on to write other books, but, more importantly, his example encouraged other athletes to write honestly as well. Funny, candid, and even more interesting because it doesn’t chronicle an exceptional season (something Brosnan reserved for his second book, Pennant Race, 1962), this book was a game changer. --Keir Graff

The First Of The Real Sports Journalists

I first read Mr. Brosnans book in the year it was published. My opinion of it has not changed in the last (could it be true) almost half a century. In "Long Season" Mr. Brosnan gives us what seems to be a very believable and accurate account of what major league baseball was like in the almost now forgotten days of the mid twentieth century. As a pitcher for the St Louis Cardinals and the Cincinnati Reds, Mr. Brosnan (I cant bring myself to call him Jim) gives what is a humorous and thoughtful insight what it is like to be a non-marquee player on teams that were quite frankly, less than steller. The Book, which is written in diary form, is an easy read. It flows from start to finish in a very readable manner. Mr. Brosnan has the talent to make everyone of his teamates and coaches come alive. As the reader, you feel that you are sitting in a bar, sipping on an adult beverage and listening to the author tell you of his everyday life in a now forgotten world of professional sports.
I guarantee you will become a fan of bullpen pitchers and oversized, bespeckled and hard-throwing righthanders within the first 10 pages.

Gentlemanly, Irreverent, Serious,

This insightful diary by pitcher Jim Brosnan recounts his struggles on the mound for the 1959 St. Louis Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds. Jocks weren't supposed to write books, but this college-educated ballplayer (uncommon in the 1950's) wrote a very good one. Brosnan's mild irreverence annoyed the game's overseers in an era when ballplayers earned modest paychecks and rarely popped off. Older fans may enjoy reading about long-forgotten ballplayers playing in now-demolished ballparks like Forbes Field and Sportsmen's Park. Brosnan followed this book with "Pennant Race," a diary from the 1961 season. Some alledge that the Chicago White Sox tried to insert a clause in Brosnan's contract banning him from publishing anything, while others say he was blackballed from the game after 1963 for his writings. Readers may also enjoy "Ball Four," pitcher Jim Bouton's funny and more combative diary of the 1969 season.

An excellent book, not a stone left unturned

While Brosnan ruffled some feathers with this book, it isn't anywhere near as controversial or raunchy as Jim Bouton's "Ball Four." Brosnan does mention his difficult contract negotiation, but it's not as bitter as Bouton discussing contracts. Brosnan has an elephant-like memory for conversations and the batting history of every hitter he faces. You get to see every aspect of a game, from the pitchers discussing how to pitch to a batter to who's got the best pitch to the manager's pep talks before the game. Brosnan has an excellent grasp of the language and even perplexes some of his not as scholarly teammates with some of his words. Overall, a great read from a talented pitcher and author. I look forward to reading "Pennant Race."

About the Author
Jeff Scott Cole middle school teacher, and broken-down archaeologist whose foray into the paranormal represents a hiatus from the traditional history texts typically found in his personal stacks. Recently transplanted from Ohio’s “eerie” coast, he currently resides in Atlanta, Georgia.

Johnathon Robson has been a death metal musician, music production artist, and bank fraud investigator turned paranormal investigator. Johnathon grew up with an avid interest in the paranormal field, and in 2011 he formed C-Bus (Columbus) Paranormal. He resides in Mount Gilead, Ohio.

Interesting and well written

Boy, did I enjoy this book ! I like reading about true ghost stories and ghost hunting, and this one was right up my alley .
The author is in his 50's,and has a quite scientific type background ,and has always been interested in the paranormal, but yet, wasn't ever sure whether he totally believed in it or not . Like me, he enjoyed watching all the ghost hunting type TV shows ,and at the beginning he comments a bit on them, not mentioning any one in particular, other than to hint that he finds some much more credible than others. I could tell by the hints he gave as to which ones he thought were well done, while others, he didn't approve of their tactics at all .
So anyhow, he begins with a local group and they teach him the ropes .The go on many investigations to all sorts of buildings .
He has a couple chapters that are totally on what equipment to purchase if you are interested in getting into this hobby , but the others are solely on the investigations he went on, and the things that he liked and didn't like. He also mentioned that sometimes you may not hear or see a thing, while others, the activity starts immediately .
This book was different than any of the other ghost sorts of books I've read . I read this on my Fire, and during each chapter, there were clickable links to go to a website that had a picture of the building they went to, pictures of any evidence ,and also EVP's that were captured that you can listen to.
Well worth the money to read this if you are into ghost hunting . Quite interesting !

GHOST HUNTING LIKE YOU HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED BEFORE.

For those who are curious about the paranormal or even experts in the field, this is an exciting trip taken along with the author into his real experiences into the paranormal. It flows so well that you just have to keep reading. There are also clips of actual audio/video evidence that I found fascinating and it really helped the reader be in the "moment" of what he was experiencing. I look forward to his next book with anticipation of what he will "catch" as evidence.

Even if You are a Non-Believer, An Enjoyable Read

I was surprised at how "normal" this book on the paranormal sounded - and I do mean "sounded" as it is an interactive Kindle book. The authors take on the sensationalistic television shows and books, the claims of which often hurt the legitimate investigators into the paranormal. I don't want to give anything more away, except to say that even if you don't believe in ghosts, the book is very entertaining, a fun read.
