Good, quick summary

This is just what it purports to be: a good quick summary of a much longer work. If you are interested and want more, buy the book. It would be nice if these were free, but someone has to bear the costs of preparing a summary and making it available. I thought this one was quite clear. I also think that in many cases, the central idea of a non-fiction book can be summarized in a few paragraphs or pages and that the rest is all padding with examples. This summary is a wonderful time-saver.

Flawed, but still worthy. The only X-men run worth following.

I had to write this after reading the other customer review which claims that Utopia is the book to read. Not for this longtime X-men fan. The X-force title is the only vital X-men book in the fold lately, and this book is certainly a worthy follow-up to the Messiah Complex, although not as good as that collection.

The Bishop mini-series included at the end of the book should be read FIRST. It was pretty good-- and certainly a needed primer in X-men past and future history. I enjoyed the refresher course which helped sort out a lot of the mythology around Bishop, Cable, and the Summers' storyline.

The second section of the book focuses on Cable and Hope as they move through time fleeing Bishop. I really liked this segment, as I haven't had much interest in Cable and this was a good way to get back into the character-- the authors really deepened his inner dialog and managed to make some sense of his convoluted history (again providing a needed sorting out of a lot of this messy continuity), while painting a very bleak portrait of the distant future-- an intriguing science ficiton-esque warning of things to come. The character of the child Hope was also well done. The relationship between her and Cable was quite compellingly portrayed.

The latter half of the book depicts X-force hooking up with Cable and a big showdown between them, Stryfe, Apocalypse, Bishop, and Deadpool. This section had a few improbable plot twists involving Angel and Apocalypse, and some hard-to-follow action sequences, but overall it worked. The scripting was great--- Deadpool was hilarious, and the whole X-factor team has a neat dynamic. I enjoyed catching up with Stryfe, who made a interesting villain. The story itself was a somewhat confusing, but still very interesting sci-fi conception of the far future involving some time-travel paradoxes and such. I give the authors credit for really pushing the envelope in portraying very ambitious concepts of time travel and extrapolating the X-men mythology to create a vision of the extreme future.

The book also features some great pages of notes on Cable and X-men mythology and characters-- very helpful in refreshing one's memory/boning up on this incredibly complicated saga.

I thought the artwork was excellent throughout the whole book, although the weirdly cartoony style of the Bishop series took some getting used to.

I hold back from a 5-star rating because of some of the head-scratching moments at the end of the story...there are just a couple plot holes and some annoyingly deliberate teasers about future revelations that left me feeling unsatisfied. But overall this is a very good X-men book, and certainly it is head and shoulders above the idiotic "Utopia" book, which features corny and ridiculous dialog, inexplicable character behavior, horrible and wildly inconsistent artwork, and an utterly stupid plot.

I understood now that I was just like America--loud, without pedigree, misinformed and often drunk. But I had grit. Gumption. A willful ignorance of my limitations. And if my email inbox was to be believed (and it is, just ask my good friend the Crown Prince of Nigeria), wine was being made in every state of the union, including Vermont, Georgia, Nebraska and Missouri. I even got a come-on from a winery in Arkansas that featured an on-site RV park. That was the final straw. I had to go drink the wine made in places you would never think made wine. I needed to know if Yankee obstinacy, Midwestern stick-to-itiveness or Deep South Zen had produced juice that could compete with the big mean mothers out in Napa and Sonoma. I would drink my way across America. For science. Or something. It was time to stop living in the shadow of lost limbs, ex-girlfriends and dead brothers and hurtle, screaming into the sunlight. I would combine my ignorance and sadness into a massive Big Gulp of despair, then pour it out my car's window across America's highways as I plundered its precious purple bounty. This would not be a tale of a man drinking himself to death. This would be a tale of a man drinking himself to life. Hopefully.

About the Author
Dan Dunn has been, at varying times, a hardscrabble Philly kid, a member of Hunter S. Thompson's entourage, a newspaper and magazine columnist, a television comedy writer, a nightlife correspondent for Playboy, and the author of several cleverly titled books.
 
Widely recognized as one of the world's leading experts in adult beverages, he hosted Dan Dunn's Happy Hour, a weekly national radio show on SiriusXM that featured luminaries from the world of wine, beer and spirits along with pop culture icons such as Ray Romano, Hall & Oates, Kurt Russell, Olivia Wilde, and the Most Interesting Man in the World. He's appeared on Conan, The Adam Carolla Show, The Henry Rollins Show and numerous other fancy media-type programs.
 
For years, Dan penned the popular "Imbiber" column for Playboy, and is still a contributor to the magazine. He co-wrote (along with Rob McElhenney of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia) the half-hour comedy pilot Living Loaded, which is based on Dan's book Living Loaded: Tales of Sex, Salvation and the Pursuit of the Never-Ending Happy Hour (Random House, 2011). The pilot, produced by FX for Fox, starred Donald Sutherland, Mike Vogel and Larry Wilmore. Dan also authored the books Nobody Likes a Quitter... and other reasons to avoid rehab (Running Press, 2007) and The Gang Writes a Self-Help Book: The Seven Secrets of Awakening the Highly Effective Four Hour Giant, TODAY (HarperCollins, January 2015). His forthcoming book, American Wino: A Tale of Reds, Whites and One Man's Blues (HarperCollins) will be released inApril 2016.
 
He is a former staff writer for the Emmy-nominated TV series Talk Soup. His work has appeared in GQ, Vanity Fair, Esquire, USA Today, Maxim, LA Weekly, Newsday, Los Angeles Magazine and the LA Times.

I met Dan at the Aspen Food & Wine Classic ...

I met Dan at the Aspen Food & Wine Classic and both bought a signed copy and downloaded the Kindle version. Read about a third on the flight home and laughed out loud so much I'm surprised my seatmate didn't ask to be moved!

Dan writes in a voice that is both authentic and entertaining, and takes the often rarefied world of the wine connoisseur down several notches!

It's a wine soaked "Travels with Charley," complete with a Carl Vehicle, dog tales, and cameos from the famous to the obscure.

You don't have to be an American Wino to LOVE this book. Dan Dunn did a superb job of finding America's best wine regions . . .while also finding himself. American Wino is humorous and heartfelt and it's best read while paired with your best red.

You do learn about the wonderful wine regions of America, but you get to know Dan and the people in his life and they're a real interesting eclectic group of people. American Wino: A Tale of Reds, Whites, and One Man's Blues
