Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle KStJ, DL (22 May 1859 – 7 July 1930) was an Irish-Scots writer and physician, most noted for creating the fictional detective Sherlock Holmes and writing stories about him which are generally considered milestones in the field of crime fiction. Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was born on 22 May 1859 at 11 Picardy Place, Edinburgh, Scotland.[6][7] His father, Charles Altamont Doyle, was English, of Irish Catholic descent, and his mother, Mary (née Foley), was Irish Catholic. His parents married in 1855.[8] In 1864 the family dispersed due to Charles's growing alcoholism and the children were temporarily housed across Edinburgh. In 1867, the family came together again and lived in squalid tenement flats at 3 Sciennes Place.[9] Doyle's father died in 1893, in the Crichton Royal, Dumfries, after many years of psychiatric illness.[10][11] Supported by wealthy uncles, Doyle was sent to the Jesuit preparatory school Hodder Place, Stonyhurst, at the age of nine (1868–70). He then went on to Stonyhurst College until 1875. From 1875 to 1876, he was educated at the Jesuit school Stella Matutina in Feldkirch, Austria.[9] He later rejected the Catholic faith and become an agnostic.[12] He also later became a spiritualist mystic. He is also known for writing the fictional adventures of a second character he invented, Professor Challenger, and for popularising the mystery of the Mary Celeste. He was a prolific writer whose other works include fantasy and science fiction stories, plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction and historical novels.

Edwardians Seek a Living Jurassic World

Published two years before ERB’s Tarzan of the Apes this classic adventure tale bears no resemblance to future Doyle’s works featuring the super intelligent and observant detective, Sherlock Holmes. The early 20th century exalted fantasy, ruthless maniac and mad scientists; both ERB and Jules Verne also deposited their protagonists into a primeval world of Jurassic beasts. Narrated predominantly by a young newspaper reporter, Malone, the story is to be published serially as his intermittent letters/reports reach London—IF they do at all.
Seeking to impress the young lady of his dreams Malone is rejected in his suit because his girl wants a man who makes his own miracles—who conquers new worlds (in her name), he resolves to prove himself worthy of her love and ultimately volunteers for a dangerous adventure. (Doyle, as a Scotsman, can not resist throwing in gentle jibes at the English establishment while he promotes the Irish and Scots. These subtle references provide some dubious comic relief in an otherwise serious novel.
Four men are formally charged by the Zoological Society to undertake a daring expedition beyond the forbidding Amazon: to prove or disprove Professor Challenger’s assertion that Jurassic life is still extent on a remote plateau deep in the rain forest. A scornful critic, professor Summerlee agrees to go along to keep things scientificaly honest; big game hunter and military tactician Lord John Roxton provides more practical survival skills, while Malone is swept up in the heated academic affair and goes along as a war correspondent.
The blending of 20th century with prehistoric animals suggests Sci Fi, but this lost world is on Earth, so it can not be strictly classified as Sci Fi--but rather as Fantasy. Nearly insurmountable dangers and challenges await the quartet: treachery from natives, (though the devoted loyalty of one black man is admirable), an inaccessible plateau, a tribe of brutish ape-men, possibly hostile contemporary Indians, with a host of Jurassic monsters provide more than enough conflict. Nature, murderous South American tribesmen and even hospitable Indians conspire to create opportunities for both mental and physical exertion. But If they ultimately reach civilization how will a skeptical public react to their claims of live Pterodactyls and the such? (Fortunately no T-Rex, at least, are on the prowl). Jolly good literary show—I say! Makes you yearn for good old Pellucidar.

Fantastic read!

I have a 1st edition. This is a classic. I bought the digital version to avoid turning pages in my original. I also have a paperback, but still easier to read the digital. Should be 6 or 7 stars.
