~~ A blunt and honest look at life in Africa as a Catholic priest ~~

In this frank, sometimes amusing, memoir, travel with Michael Barrington to Nigeria during the time of civil war. Had Michael always been destined to be a priest? According to his grandmothers he had! 'Jas' Simpson, a priest and friend of the family had spent years in Africa and was a big influence in Michael's life. Michael caught the 'bug' and years later at the age of 26 and a newly ordained priest found himself in Lagos, Nigeria in the Makurdi diocese.
What happened on the 'mammy wagon'? Who did they play a snake trick on? Was all peaceful between the priests? Hah! Meet the swearing parrot named Joe. 'Walk' with Michael through his first bout of Malaria. What did "seeing Africa" really mean? As he moved around the different areas and went on many, many safaris you will 'see' how this priest was a part of the people/tribes. He didn't live in luxury whilst they lived in poverty. In many ways his life was very lonely as for many years he ministered on his own without the help of another priest. What did that feel like?
Is this a tell all? In some cases you might say "Yes". The author is not secret about the abuse to young boys and the frustration he felt when his warnings were not taken seriously by those higher up thereby allowing the abuse to carry on albeit somewhere else. When we meet Frank at the beginning of the book we feel his frustration and see the reality of having to deal with other priests sexually abusing boys in their care. PLEASE PLEASE note that this author was NOT an abuser.
Why, when he had built a successful mission from nothing and finally "arrived" did he feel lost and alone? Who became his confidante? How was this the beginning of being betrayed by his own brotherhood even though Michael was innocent?
This book grips the reader from the beginning not for its thriller-like excitement but due to being so interesting. It is well-written for the most part and fast paced. I would advise adding a gap/line or something similar between scene changes as it really throws the reader to be in one scene and then suddenly switch to another with no warning. You will find the language "blue" at times as the author recounts not only his only speech but that of the other priests. Of course drinking beer and smoking are part of the course. The epilogue brings you up to date but may, like me, leave you with one question: What happened to Terry? Book provided in exchange for an honest review. Thanks, Liz

This is a Must read.

Wow! What an amazing read. This is material for a screen play or TV series. I simply could put this down. If this were anything but an Indie published book, it would surely be on the best seller list!
Beautifully written in an engaging, entertaining style, the reader is carried along at a fast pace as Michael, a young missionary priest, arrives in Nigeria to begin his ministry. A civil has just begun and the difficulties and challenges that he is faced with, in addition to his culture shock both in his own religious order and with the various tribes he lives with are daunting and sometimes shocking. Lack of basic amenities, food, supplies, dental and medical care are all accepted as being simply a part of doing one’s job. We see the constant push and pull of a young man trained in a new model of serving others battling with more traditional approaches and experiencing serious conflict among his colleagues.
The book is written in a style where almost each chapter can stand alone although there are consistent themes knitting them all together: the excitement of helping people, the thrill of mission work, but deep loneliness and the questioning of himself, the priesthood and above all the brotherhood of religious life.
What really happened on the road to Otrukpo when he was held up to be shot by drunken soldiers, what was it like having to give blood in a half built hospital in a remote village to save a woman’s life, how did Michael feel when a Muslim friend offered him his youngest wife for the night if only he would stay with him and why did the burial of a young school girl he was mentoring make him question his celibacy? The honesty with which the author confronts these issues and shares his raw feelings with the reader make this a captivating, amusing and in some ways a sobering read. We are taken with him on a roller-coaster of emotions as people, places and things deeply affect him. His account of being close to death with malaria fever for the first time is told only as a historical fact since he was delirious for five days and it was his alcoholic pastor who nursed him and later told him of what had happened.
There must be another book to follow this one! The reader is left wanting more and asking many questions even though the epilogue briefly brings us into the present. As an avid reader of memoir and autobiography, I cannot recall any book in recent years that deals with these topics or has had such a gripping effect on me.

Compelling memoir of a missionary priest

"The Bishop Wears No Drawers" is a compelling memoir written by Michael Barrington, a former missionary priest in Nigeria. It details his adventures in this African country during the time of civil war in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Barrington writes vividly about his experiences among the people of Nigeria, about the difficulties of getting from one place to another, particularly during the rainy season when the dirt roads turn to mud, about the lack of available medical care for the many diseases rampant in the area, the heat and humidity, the primitive housing, and much more, all of which gives the reader the feeling that he or she is personally present with the author.
But it's far more than a book about the immediate area where Father Barrington labored. It's also a story about Barrington's colleagues in the mission field, some of whom are hard-working and well-meaning, but others who are lazy, corrupt, or full of jealousy. We encounter an alcoholic priest whose aim in life seems to be to avoid work at all cost so he can sit around all day, read, chain-smoke cigarettes, and waste his life. Then there's the priest who regularly takes up with native women, and who simply gets transferred by the bishop to a different location when his indiscretions become public; and, of course, the pedophile priests who likewise receive the "punishment" of transfer rather than discipline.
Barrington's memoir held my attention throughout. It's believable and fascinating, and hard to put down.
