I wasn't sure what to make of this book as I am extremely picky in what I will read. However, I couldn't put this book down once I started. You instantly get drawn in to the characters lives as if you're there with them. It has a great story line and I was sad when i was finished because I wanted more! Would definitely recommend.

Guilty pleasure romance

This is going to be what I refer to as a "drive by book review", which basically means that I was sucked into reading a book that I had no plan to review. As with most of my drive by reviews, this book proved to be a time sink; I have no idea where my missing hours went or how it happened.

I downloaded the story off Amazon during a free day. The author has been a guest on my blog but she didn't request a review or provide an ARC. I opened the first page to check out the writing and BOOM--spent the next several hours ignoring my own story due to compulsive page turning to find out what would happen next.

The Cover: OMG, LOOOOVE IT!

The Story: I note with amusement that this is a paranormal time travel romance. When you're married to a physics & math guy, time travel stories are the equivalent of a pint of dark chocolate gelato hidden in the freezer. I know it's wrong, but I don't care.

I found Emma Kaye's writing style to have overall good flow with occasional rough patches where I felt there was some telling going on. The cast of characters is complex and interesting, but dialogue had an overall modern feel to it. The plot held my attention throughout. I felt the author did a pretty good job of addressing the social inequities facing women in the past without getting preachy about it.

I liked the heroine, Alex, who is a competent modern woman with some believable confidence issues. Poor Alex finds herself in some hilarious situations as a modern woman confronted with historical social conventions. Her hero, Nicholas, is a ship's captain and English nobility from another era. He's a bit of a male chauvinist but in adorable and forgivable ways.

I loved the interaction between the hero and heroine but I do have one complaint. Heat levels never exceeded more than a few steamy kisses. Damn it, that cover promised me ripped bodices and heaving bosoms! I really wanted more in the way of chicka-chicka-boom-boom.

The Happily Ever After ending left me with the same happy, endorphins-firing buzz as the aforementioned pint of chocolate gelato, but with a lot fewer calories. Recommended for anyone looking for a guilty pleasure.

Clumsy and awkward

A very strangely written story. I was so excited about the plot as it had a lot of potential but it was clumsily handled. There are many areas where nothing is explained so you are left with a very disconnected feeling. The characters were not fleshed out so it was difficult to develop any kind of rapport or any feelings for them. The female lead character was strange in that she was supposedly tough but often fell apart, usually only when the male lead was around. Please authors don't write a strong female character that turns into an idiot as soon as a male walks in. Also the male lead said he loved the female but in the next breath said she was always lying to him and he didn't trust her. What? If this is a first novel I hope the author takes some time to flesh out her characters better and hone her craft more before publishing another.

Time Travel Romance Done Well

I love time travel romance. The blend of contemporary and historical is always fun because someone is always out of their element - which creates some great conflict. I can only imagine how difficult it is to write such a story. The author must be adept at understanding the nuances of both genres and keep their characters true to both eras. Not an easy feat.
I'm delighted to say Emma Kay has mastered time travel romance, evidenced by her debut release, Time For Love.

The story has an interesting premise. Saucy heroine, Alexandra (Alex) Turner, agrees to go back in time through a secret portal to rescue her twin sister, Charlotte. Historical newspapers indicate Charlotte will die within two months if Alex fails. Her task is a serious one so the initial meeting of darkly handsome Nicholas Somerville adds the spice I was waiting for. Since Alex is dressed as a boy of that era, Nicholas has no idea of the effect he has on her.

Of course, Nicholas has issues of his own to resolve. He must leave his wayfaring lifestyle as ship's captain behind to take over as ninth Marquess of Oakleigh. To make matters worse, he now must find a suitable wife.
The two embark on a series of adventures which threaten their lives and new found love.

It's a cute story filled with passion and beautiful descriptions that put the reader right in the heart of the tale. If you enjoy time travel romance, regency historicals and/or feisty heroines, you should definitely read Time For Love.
